Riviera Beach joined the likes of San Diego, Baltimore, and Atlanta last summer after paying $600,000 worth of bitcoin to hackers who held the city’s computer systems ransom after malware infiltrated computers through a phishing email opened by a city employee.

Officials felt they had no choice but to cave to hacker’s demands after both crucial data and the city’s 911 dispatch had been compromised.

Riviera Beach is just one city out of many that has recently fallen victim to such crimes. More concerning is the lack of preparedness we’ve seen in these city governments, even as more and more headlines like these begin to surface.

Following this attack, Riviera’s council voted to spend $1 million dollars to update their computer systems. Needless to say, by keeping their systems updated along with holding regular educational seminars regarding cyber security for their employees, they could’ve easily avoided such hefty financial consequences!
